The Income Tax Return Form 2 (ITR-2) is designed for specific categories of taxpayers whose income sources extend beyond salary and interest income. With Assessment Year 2026-27 corresponding to Financial Year 2025-26, knowing whether you need to file ITR-2 and understanding the process is essential for compliance.

Who Should File ITR-2

ITR-2 is applicable to individuals and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) who do not have income from profits and gains of business or profession. This form is mandatory for several categories of taxpayers.

You must file ITR-2 if you are an individual or HUF with income from any of the following sources:

  • Capital gains from sale of property, stocks, mutual funds, or other assets
  • More than one house property
  • Foreign assets or foreign income
  • Income as a director in a company
  • Income from lottery, racehorses, or legal gambling
  • Agricultural income exceeding Rs 5,000
  • Total income exceeding Rs 50 lakh (even if you only have salary income)

Essentially, if you have capital gains or own multiple properties, ITR-2 becomes your applicable form regardless of your other income sources.

Key Deadlines for ITR-2 Filing

For Assessment Year 2026-27, which covers income earned during Financial Year 2025-26 (April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2026), taxpayers need to be aware of critical dates.

The last date for filing ITR-2 for non-audit cases is typically July 31, 2026. However, the Income Tax Department may extend this deadline, as has been the practice in recent years. Taxpayers requiring audits under various sections of the Income Tax Act have an extended deadline, usually October 31, 2026.

Filing after the due date attracts penalties and consequences including late filing fees of up to Rs 5,000, interest on unpaid taxes, and inability to carry forward certain losses.

Documents Required for ITR-2 Filing

Before beginning the filing process, gather all necessary documents to ensure accurate reporting. These include Form 16 if you are a salaried individual, bank statements showing interest income, capital gains statements from brokers or mutual fund houses, property tax receipts and rental income details, and investment proofs for deductions under Chapter VIA.

Additionally, keep your Aadhaar card, PAN card, and bank account details handy for verification purposes. If you have foreign assets or income, detailed statements of the same are necessary.

Step-by-Step Filing Process

The ITR-2 filing process can be completed online through the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal.

First, log in to the e-filing portal using your PAN as user ID. Navigate to the e-File section and select Income Tax Return. Choose Assessment Year 2026-27 and select ITR-2 as your form type.

Select between online and offline filing modes. The online mode allows you to fill the form directly on the portal, while offline mode requires downloading a utility, filling it, and uploading the generated JSON or XML file.

Enter your personal information, gross total income from all sources including salary, house property, capital gains, and other sources. Report deductions claimed under Chapter VIA such as Section 80C, 80D, and others. The portal will automatically calculate your tax liability.

Verify the tax already paid through TDS, advance tax, or self-assessment tax. If there is a shortfall, pay the balance before filing. If you have excess tax paid, you can claim a refund.

Before submission, thoroughly verify all details using the preview option. Once satisfied, submit the ITR. You will receive an acknowledgment with an ITR-V number.

Verification of Filed Return

After filing, verification within 30 days is mandatory. You can verify electronically using Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or through your bank account. Alternatively, send a signed physical copy of ITR-V to the Centralized Processing Centre in Bengaluru.

Unverified returns are considered invalid, making verification a critical final step in the filing process.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Taxpayers often make errors such as incorrect reporting of capital gains, especially distinguishing between short-term and long-term gains. Ensure you claim all applicable deductions and exemptions. Double-check bank account details to avoid refund processing issues. Always verify the return within the stipulated time frame.
