The Income Tax Department's e-filing portal relies heavily on mobile number verification through One-Time Passwords (OTPs) for secure access. When taxpayers lose their registered mobile number—whether due to a lost phone, damaged SIM card, or discontinued number—accessing the portal can seem impossible. However, the Income Tax Department provides several workarounds to help taxpayers regain access without the original OTP.

Why Mobile Number Verification Matters

The Income Tax portal uses two-factor authentication to protect taxpayer data and prevent unauthorized access. When you log in, an OTP is sent to your registered mobile number as a second layer of security beyond your password. This system works well until your phone is lost, stolen, or your number becomes inaccessible.

Alternative Login Methods

The Income Tax Department has implemented multiple authentication options recognizing that mobile access issues are common. Taxpayers can use their Aadhaar-based login as a primary alternative. If your Aadhaar is linked to your PAN and you have access to the mobile number registered with UIDAI, you can receive an OTP on that number instead.

Another option is using the Electronic Verification Code (EVC) generated through your net banking account. Most major banks allow taxpayers to generate an EVC that can be used for various functions on the Income Tax portal, including certain types of verification.

Using the Offline Request Process

When digital alternatives aren't available, taxpayers can submit a physical request to update their mobile number. This involves downloading the mobile number update request form from the Income Tax portal (accessible from the login page itself without signing in). The form requires your PAN details, new mobile number, and supporting documentation.

You'll need to attach a self-attested copy of your PAN card and a cancelled cheque or bank statement showing your name and account details. Some taxpayers may also need to provide address proof. This completed form can be sent to the Centralized Processing Center in Bengaluru via registered post or courier.

Visiting the Aaykar Seva Kendra

For immediate assistance, taxpayers can visit their nearest Aaykar Seva Kendra (Income Tax Help Center). These centers are equipped to handle mobile number update requests and other portal access issues. Carry your PAN card, Aadhaar card, and any other identity proof along with a document showing your new mobile number (such as a recent mobile bill or connection document).

The officials at these centers can verify your identity in person and initiate the mobile number update process. This method typically resolves the issue faster than postal requests.

Contacting the E-Filing Helpdesk

The Income Tax Department operates a dedicated helpdesk for e-filing related queries. Taxpayers can call the toll-free number 1800-103-0025 (for India) or email their concerns. When contacting the helpdesk, be prepared to provide your PAN, name as per PAN, date of birth, and explain your situation clearly.

The helpdesk can guide you through alternative verification methods or initiate a manual verification process. They may ask security questions based on your previous returns or registered information to verify your identity.

Preventing Future Access Issues

Once you regain access to your portal, immediately update your contact information. Consider registering multiple mobile numbers if the portal allows, and ensure your email address is current and accessible. Regularly verify that your Aadhaar details are updated, as this serves as a crucial backup authentication method.

Enable all available security features and maintain a record of your login credentials in a secure location. Consider linking your bank account for EVC generation, which provides another layer of access security.

Processing Time Expectations

Digital methods like Aadhaar-based login work immediately if your Aadhaar-PAN linking is complete. Physical requests submitted by post typically take 15-30 days for processing. Visits to Aaykar Seva Kendras usually result in faster resolution, often within a few working days, depending on the verification requirements and workload.
